The Reiner's Spin...

The true meaning of a "Broke Horse"
By Kathie Ferrante

The term “A Broke Horse” has many different meanings depending on who you talk to. The term “Broke Horse” is used in such a casual manner that we think or believe that a horse is somewhat “trained!

Nothing could be further from the truth. Just because a horse can be saddled, will stand quietly and can be ridden around the arena with out bucking you off doesn’t make him a broke horse.

A broke horse is one that has all of the basic training and is ready to go on to a career in performance. This is an equivalent to a child going from kindergarten through 12th grade and is ready for college. (This is the term I use for a “broke horse”) After a college education (career training) the horse will then go out into the real world of “Showing” (If he makes it)

To me, this is when a horse shows his true potential and becomes a truly well broke horse. Not just broke to ride.

Remember to be patent with your horses and that behavior is shaped by whatever follows.
